KAPIL DEV’S DO OR DIE SITUATION IN A MATCH AGAINST ZIMBABWE

By Jyothi Venkatesh

History will be revisited when the Indian cricket team of 1983 world cup will be seen visiting The Kapil
Sharma Show. India’s favourite comedian Kapil Sharma will host the fabulous cricket team of 1983 world
cup who won the first ever world cup for India.
The team lead by Kapil Dev comprised of Mohinder Amarnath, Sandeep Patil, Dilip Vengsarkar,
Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Roger Binny, Kirti Azad, Madan Lal, Syed Kirmani, Balwinder Sandhu, Yashpal
Sharma and Sunil Gavaskar joined through Skype. There were a lot of unknown secrets shared by the team

One of them included a match against Zimbabwe which was not recorded due to media strike. It was a
do or die match for India where India needed minimum of 311 runs in 60 overs to retain their rank.
When asked by Kapil Sharma, Kapil Dev replied “It was just a target of 311 and we all thought that it was
easily achievable, so when our innings started, the openers went on the field, I thought I will quickly
have bath and freshen up before I have to step out on the field. But I hadn’t even finished bathing and I
kept getting the news that we are one wicket down, we are two wickets down… by the time I came out,
I had to quickly pad up without even realizing what exactly is happening. The day I scored a total of 175
not out.” Guess all his anger was channelized on the field!

Sunil Gavaskar recalled how all the five players who got out at 17 hid around the place when Kapil Dev came back to the dressing room after hitting 175 expecting a dressing down from him.
